Listening and responding
Procedures:
Introduction:
The teacher will introduce students to the song “Animals on the Move”
The teacher will ask the students to sing along with the song until most students are familiar with the lyrics.
The teacher will review action verbs and provide examples as needed.
The teacher will provide students with a brief overview of body percussion.
Body:
The teacher will divide the students into groups of three.
The teacher will instruct the students in body percussion techniques.  Examples provided to include snapping, stomping, slapping legs, clapping, and rubbing hands together.
The teacher will ask the students to answer the following questions:
·         What sounds can you produce using body percussion?
·         Can you pick out the action verbs used in the song?
·         What body percussion sounds match the action verbs used best?

The teacher will allow the students to explore the various forms of body percussion.
After the students have a good grasp on body percussion, the teacher will help students indentify the action verbs used in the song.
While remaining in small groups the teacher will assist students in selecting the body percussion forms that will be used to indicate the action verbs used.
The teacher will assist in the pairing of the actions verbs with the body percussion techniques.
·         Snake slithering-rubbing hands together
·         Rabbit crossing-  snapping
·         Elephant stomping- stomping
·         Bear climbing-slapping knees
·         Dog running-clapping quickly
The teacher will sing the song and “act out” the action verbs using the body percussion techniques selected.
The students will then join the teacher in acting out the action verbs using body percussion.
Closure:
The students will leave their small groups and the teacher will lead the class by reviewing body percussion, action verbs, and how they two were incorporated. The students will be able to use different types of body percussion to indicate action verbs within the song.
Assessment:
The teacher will assess the student’s ability to listen to the music and respond by performing body percussion to indicate their ability to identify the action verbs used. Teacher will switch to a different group to assess student performance throughout the lesson.
Materials:
“Animals on the Move” - May display lyrics on the board per preference
“Animals on the Move”
Oh no, the animals have escaped!
The snake slithered away through the grass
The bear climbed up the tree
The elephant stomped across the floor
The dog went running after him
The rabbit happily hopped across the field

Hey Guys!
I've provided the written lesson plan above as well as explained the musical component through video.
But here's an informal explanation of the lesson plan I created:

I chose to include Music and Language Arts.
Body percussion-Music   Action verbs-Language Arts

The objectives are for the students to be able to demonstrate body percussion by providing 5 sounds made as well as identify the action verbs used within a song.

1) Music- teach body percussion and allow students to explore by making their own sounds!
2)Language- review action verbs and have students identify them in the song

Use body percussion to indicate the action verb used within the song.
Ex: The snake slithered away through the grass. The students would rub hands together to produce the sound rather than actually saying slithered.   (See video above)

*Also, I didn't include it in the video because it was more Language Arts-but to add on to identifying action verbs you could ask students to change the action verb to present, future, or past tense.

*A bonus of this lesson plan is that there are very little materials used so it can be used in many different settings regardless of financial restraints.

Thanks for your time and good luck to everyone!   Rachel

Teaching Methods

Orff
Kodaly
Dalcroze

The video's shown above differ in many ways. Some examples include different levels of participation required from the students. In my opinion, the Dalcroze method demonstrated in the video allows for the most freedom for children to express how the music makes them feel. For example, if the tempo was slow their movements followed that speed but when the tempo increased their movements sped up and the kids really seemed to have fun! The Kodaly approach demonstrated in the video allowed children to be engaged with the lesson by using the hand signals. However, it seemed as though the children had difficulty staying on task in order to really learn this method. It also seemed as though the teacher had trouble focusing due to distractions.  The Orff approach shown allows the children to explore music via use of musical instruments. Many children don't have musical instruments in their homes thus making this method more interesting to the children. There are benefits to each of the methods mentioned above. The Orff approach is student centered and allows for active learning via music making and can be incorporated into various creative activities. The Kodaly approach has music literacy in mind, the children were able to denote high and low by hand positioning. The benefits of this approach include the fact that children are able to read music fluently and transfer these skills to instruments following learning this method. Benefits of using the Dalcroze method include ease of use and often the piano is used which is common for a music classroom to contain if practicing within the U.S. This method also seemed to keep the children's attention the best. The children reacted differently throughout all the videos. The Orff method seemed to be more controlled as the children sat while using the instruments. The Kodaly approach seemed to be affected by its environment the most. Some children were off task and this created issues for the other students as well as the teacher. The Dalcroze method allowed children to learn but at the same time allow them the freedom to express how the music made them feel via movement!

The Four Families of Instruments

The Harp-String Family. He is plucking the strings to produce sound!

The Drum-Percussion Family. He is striking the drums with the drum sticks to create sound.

The Trumpet- Brass Family. He is producing sound by blowing air inside the brass instrument.
The Clarinet- Woodwind Family. He is producing sound by blowing across the surface. Pressing his lips across the mouthpiece, and causing the reed to vibrate.

Week 7 The good Vs. bad!

The video I selected for incorrect vocal technique is Roseanne Barr attempting to sing the national anthem...I say attempting because it's pretty tragic! ha! She clearly doesn't have the vocal range required for the song and she seems to be lacking proper technique: Her posture is poor, she is "screaming" from her throat rather than using her diaphragm, and isn't taking herself seriously or even trying to sing in tune.....she's basically a wreck...

The video I selected for correct vocal technique is Josh Groban's video which is awesome because he just grabbed a fan at one of his concerts and then sang great together. Her posture is perfect, her facial expressions (eyebrows rising&movement of her mouth) are correct, she is singing from her diaphragm,  and has the vocal range that is needed to hit the notes in the song. They sounded great!!!

Week 6 Rhythmic poem corrections

The main things that I think I could have improved on are:
1) Improved clarity by slowing down the tempo and speaking more confidently and clearly. Even after practicing the material it was hard to put it all together and make it flow well. I'm sure this will improve with practice!
2) I placed the rest in the wrong spot, it should have actually been on beat four.
3) Showed more enthusiasm which would encourage students to be more involved.  :)

Rhythm!!! 8/31

Rhythm~ A strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound. So basically....it's a reoccurring pattern of sound.

1) What do you like about the way she presented the information? Why?
- She presented the information in a way that both adults as well as children could comprehend
- Good use of visual aids
- She spoke slowly and was very precise
- She spoke with confidence and seemed knowledgeable about the subject

2) What do you dislike about the way she presented information? Why?
- Although she spoke slowly, the whole lesson seemed rather quick which didn't allow for any student participation.
- She showed very little emotion/excitement while presenting. Young children often need this in order to keep their attention

3) Is this an example of good teaching? Why do you think so?
- Overall, I believe she did a good job! The information was presented in a way that was very easy to understand. The lesson was short, which I guess is probably best when teaching elementary school students. Again, I do feel as though the students most likely were able to understand the concept but I think they would have been more interested if she would have tried to engage them more!

4) How many different ways did she present the information? Why do you think this is important?
- She used primarily teacher-centered approach. I believe she should have tried to incorporate both teacher and child-centered approaches in order to make the lesson more effective. An example would be asking the children make up their own rhythm and then discuss the patterns they noted
-Visual aids were used, which I think a lot of children as well as adults learn more easily from
-Through repetition, often repeating the main points and definitions of the lesson
-Through physical demonstration, I thought she did great when she taught the rhythm via clapping as well as using the visual aid. I believe children learn best when provided with a showing example.

Introduction

Hello everyone!
My name is Rachel Pickering and I reside in Winfield, WV.
This is my first year attending WVSU as I previously attended Marshall.
I graduated in 2009, and since then I have been working FT in outpatient and HH physical therapy.  I still work PRN but attend class Monday-Thursday in hopes of earning a degree in Elementary Education. I would love to one day be a kindergarten teacher!!! I have a little boy named Landon who just started fourth grade this year. (makes me sad :( I want to keep him small forever! lol)  Between school, work, and Landon I don't have a lot of free time on my hands. But if I do...I enjoy spending time with my little guy, running, Pinterest, and hanging out with friends. I look forward to the course because I know very little about music but I know it's a fav subject for a lot of students. I hope to be able to apply the knowledge gained to help my students after grad! My only concern for this course is the recorder...I attempted to play it when I bought it and even my 9yr old cringed! LoL  But we shall see............. : )
